What should I ask? Gowns

Describe all possible fees you might incur.
These fees can add up, so get everything in writing and up front. Some salons require a flat fee for alteration, regardless of the extent of work needed. Others will provide an estimate for alterations or include the alterations in the fee for the dress. You may also pay a rush fee if you need your gown right away. Some salons even charge a fee to try on a dress - so be careful. Inquire about this early on, and factor it into your budget.

Who completes the alterations?
Some salons will require you to use their seamstress, while others will let you choose your own. Ask if the alterations will be done by someone in-house, or a sub-contracting company. Ask to meet the seamstress before she works on your gown, to get an idea of her experience level. Make sure she has worked with the materials in your gown before allowing her to work on your dress.

What discounts do you offer?
Some salons offer a percentage off your gown or accessories if you purchase your maids' gowns there as well. You may also be eligible for discounted gown preservation, if the salon offers the service.

Can you see the manufacturer's sizing chart?
Each manufacturer has its own sizing chart. An 8 in one brand may be a 12 in another. Checking this chart before you order can minimize alteration charges later.

Is the bridal salon responsible for defective merchandise?
Before ordering, obtain in writing the salon's policy on goods that come back from the manufacturer defective, or even in the incorrect size or style. Don't make the final payment on your gown until you have inspected the gown and know it is what you wanted and ordered.

How long will it take to get the dress in?
Some manufactures require 10-14 weeks to order a typical gown, while some designers can deliver in as little as six weeks or as long as six months. Make sure you time it right, to get the dress in time for your wedding.

What free services do you offer?
You never know unless you ask. You may be eligible for free delivery of the gown to the ceremony site, free steaming or even free alterations. Some of these services might be offered quietly - ask and you shall receive.
