Ways to cut costs: wedding gowns
Think outside the box
Consider buying a gown intended for a bridesmaid - this is especially perfect if you wanted a simple style to start with.
Wear your mom's dress
It has sentimental value and might start a new tradition. With luck, it might require only slight alterations and you'll be able to splurge on accessories and other areas of the wedding day.
Look everywhere
Consider vintage shops, resale shops and even the formal wear departments of the larger stores you already love.
Shop for samples
Sample gowns - usually discontinued gowns that have been used in salons - offer great bargains at sometimes 50 percent to 75 percent off the regular price. Go in off-season - late summer and anytime between Thanksgiving and Christmas - for racks of sale gowns. Make sure to factor in any cleaning and alteration fees you might still need to make to the gown.
Haggle
Ask for the no-frills package and you just might get it, if you forego perks such as a free gown bag or steaming service.
Go custom
Ask a local seamstress (a list is available at most fabric stores) to make a copy of a dress you admire. Ask for an estimate of the costs for fabric and fittings, and compare.
Look for knock-offs
Many less expensive designers keep a watchful eye of the latest trends and might have an affordable dress in the style you admire.
