Ice sculptures for elegant impressions
It's the only wedding decoration that's two parts hydrogen and one part oxygen. Above 32 degrees Fahrenheit, you've got a puddle. Below that, with the assistance of skilled hands and the right tools, you've got an exquisite ice sculpture. For couples hoping to add a touch of elegance to their wedding decor, it's the perfect accent.
Costs
A luxury item? Perhaps, but the prices seem reasonable compared to the overall expense of putting on a wedding these days. The cost of an ice sculpture depends on the amount of detail. Standard designs will run from $300 to $350. Custom designs are often $400 and up, and can include things such as hobbies, sports and animals. Prices generally include lighting, tray rental, delivery and set up. One local couple recently ordered a $1,500 creation that featured an elaborate heart and swan scene.
How they're made
If you think it's as easy as filling an ice cube tray and waiting for the design to freeze, think again. Each sculpture is hand-carved from a 300-pound block of clear, solid ice that stands 40 inches high, 20 inches wide and 10 inches deep.
It's a calling that has its practitioners donning heavy jackets, knit caps and insulated gloves, even during the dog days of August. How does a sculptor initially approach such an imposing frozen obstacle? With a chainsaw.
The artist chisels in the fine details using up to two dozen special carving tools, and may also create a template for special letter styles, if carving the bride's and groom's names. Much of the art of ice sculpting originated in Japan, which is why the best tools still come from that country.
Expert artistry
It takes more than the right tools to create a memorable piece, however. The best ice sculptors take years to perfect their techniques, and often study under accomplished masters. Many sculptors will do extensive research to formulate a custom design, drawing up elaborate plans and testing clay models before ever touching blade to ice.
A standard sculpture comes to life in two to four hours, while a custom design takes anywhere from three to six. Its life is only as long as the reception itself, but that's long enough to make an elegant and lasting impression on wedding guests.
